In another move to fast-track infra development in Ulwe node, City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) and Central Railway (CR) are trying to speed up work for the eight-km link. The track will run from Seawoods Darave station to Kharkopar and will include five stations.

When completed, this project will help local commuters enjoy a smooth ride on suburban trains.

Cidco will float two tenders shortly. The first tender will be to appoint a consultant to design five stations till Kharkopar, while the second one would be floated for constructing nine platforms at three stations —Targhar, Bamandongri and Kharkopar. Out of the five stations along Ulwe route, Seawoods is already under construction and Sagarsangam station, being an elevated structure, will require special designing.

There are 10 stations along the stretch. They include Seawoods, Sagarsangam (earlier known as Kille junction), Targhar, Bamandongri, Kharkopar, Gavan, Ranjanpada, Nhava Sheva, Dronagiri and Uran. The stretch from Seawoods till Kharkopar does not have any problem related to land or rehabilitation packages. The problem of land acquisition begins after Kharkopar. This area includes Gavan and Ranjanpada stations along a three-km stretch.

Villages such as Chirle and Jasai, situated here, are grappling with problems like transfer of forest land. Cidco is pursuing the issue with Raigad collector and is hopeful of an early transfer of around 8-hectare land, along with acquisition of 25 hectatres of private land. After the international airport land deal with PAPs, the villagers want Cidco to offer better packages to them as well. Those who had parted with their land earlier to Cidco are yet to come to a settlement over compensation.

The three stations following the troubled 3-km stretch, Nhava Sheva, Dronagiri and Uran, are free of any hurdles.Once in place, the connectivity from Belapur to Ulwe through a ‘Y’ junction, as part of the corridor under development, will facilitate transit in south Navi Mumbai from Panvel. It will also integrate townships with the new airport that has an entry to Ulwe node and the new commercial hub being planned at Seawoods.

The various development works, including the rail link, will also see new markets and real estate coming up in the near future. There was a change in the plan to connect the rail link from Palm Beach Road to Panvel creek, as the high court wanted to save the mangroves along the 900-m stretch.

The new plan involves an elevated corridor for which 40 piers are being constructed. This corridor will pass behind the new civic headquarters above Palm Beach Road and continues till the creek to finally reconnect via the bridge. The deadline for this ambitious project, with 10 stations along the 22-km track to Uran, has already been extended from December 2016 to 2017. Work undertaken so far has an estimated budget of around Rs 382 crore, of which CR has spent about Rs 175 crore. Cidco signed a tripartite agreement with Central Railway and the state government in 2011 to undertake this ambitious project which will ease commute travel.
